Alustra® Architectural Roller Shades

Alustra® Architectural Roller Shades pair the sleekness of a roller shade with fabric-covered battens: the look of a Roman shade without the stack.

Alustra® Architectural Roller Shades by Hunter Douglas

Alustra® Architectural Roller Shades are a shade form of their own, and the first time I show one, people ask what it is. It combines the beauty of a traditional Roman shade with the minimal look of a roller shade. Fabric-wrapped, contoured battens run the full width of the shade and give it structure and dimension, yet it rolls up into the headrail like a roller. No stacked folds at the top of the window and no exposed rear cords.

The fabrics are exclusive to the Alustra® Collection, textural fabrics in distinctive hues, with more than 40 fabric and color choices in three opacities: sheer, semi-sheer and semi-opaque. Even in the sheerest fabric, the battens give the window a linear, architectural line. Shades of the same size line up batten for batten from window to window, which is what makes a row of them look intentional.

The fabric rolls off the front of the headrail, which keeps the battens evenly spaced from top to bottom and clears handles and window cranks. With the recessed option, the shade kicks back toward the window once it is fully lowered, closing the space between shade and glass for more privacy. The top can be finished with a Large Square Cassette 2.0, a bracket, or a fabric-wrapped valance, and the bottom bar is fabric-covered to match the battens.

It runs on PowerView® Gen 3 Automation or the proprietary Custom Clutch, which Hunter Douglas built for shade-to-shade lift uniformity, precise operation and a minimal light gap. There is an Internal Rechargeable Battery option for automation with no visible power at the window, and an exclusive metal Custom Clutch bracket with a metal bead chain for anyone who wants the hardware to match the fabric.

Questions Jim gets

About Alustra® Architectural.

Is this a Roman shade or a roller shade?

Both, which is the point. It has the dimension of a Roman shade, because fabric-covered battens run across it, but it rolls up into the headrail like a roller, so there is no stack of folds at the top of the window. Hunter Douglas files it with their roller shades, and that is how it operates.

How much light do the fabrics let in?

The fabrics come in three opacities, sheer, semi-sheer and semi-opaque, and there is a range within each one depending on the weave. None of them darkens a room completely. For privacy, the recessed option tucks the lowered shade back toward the window. For a bedroom you need dark, I will show you a different product for that window.

Can these be motorized?

Yes. They run on PowerView® Gen 3 Automation, with an Internal Rechargeable Battery option so there is no visible power at the window. If you would rather operate them by hand, the proprietary Custom Clutch gives smooth, even lifting from shade to shade.
